Record Description | Short stem maiden yew 5.07m girth at .50m above ground level.
This is the largest single stem yew tree recorded to date in Swaledale.
The expsed rootsystem is dramatically large and strong, clasping the block of limestone on which this tree grows with an iron grip.
This root system would originally have been within the limestone which has been destabilised to leave the roots exposed. |
Dimensions | See photos |
Geographical area | Swaledale North Bank Catchment |
Species | Yew |
Scientific Name | Taxus bacata |
Additional Notes | This tree is in good health and could continue to grow indefinitely.
All very large yews in Swaledale grow either directly from the face of limestone cliffs or on slumped limestone below the cliffs as this example.
There are very many multi stem yews in Swaledale of similar dimensions. These trees grow slowly and fallen branches show an annual growth of not more than 1mm per year and 2-3 years per mm is not uncommon. |
